The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has unveiled the NIPOST Agro-Logistics Initiative (NAILI), a bold step aimed at addressing the persistent challenges of food loss and insecurity in the country.
With over 40 percent of farm produce reportedly lost annually due to poor logistics and weak infrastructure, the initiative seeks to harness NIPOST’s extensive nationwide network to provide reliable and efficient agricultural logistics services.
The agency explained that NAILI is designed to reduce post-harvest losses, strengthen national food security, and empower rural communities through job creation and economic opportunities.
According to NIPOST, the scheme will also foster sustainable partnerships with government agencies, farmers, cooperatives, and private sector players to ensure a seamless farm-to-market value chain.
“The Agro-Logistics Initiative is not just about moving food from one point to another; it is about securing the nation’s food future, uplifting rural communities, and ensuring that no farmer’s effort goes to waste,” the postal service said in a statement.
Stakeholders in the agricultural sector have long identified logistics as one of the weakest links in Nigeria’s food system, with perishable goods often unable to reach markets in time. Experts say the NAILI initiative, if effectively implemented, could play a transformative role in bridging that gap while boosting food availability and affordability nationwide.
