According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, Nigeria has secured the top position in yam production globally, with a remarkable output of 61,171 t in 2022.
This dominance is further highlighted by Nigeria’s contribution of 69.3 percent to the total yam production worldwide. Ghana and Ivory Coast follow closely behind, with 10.7 million tonnes and 7.6 million tonnes respectively.
The total global yam production in 2022 reached 88,257 kt, marking a 2.11 percent increase compared to the previous year and a significant 39.8 percent surge over the past decade.
