Modern Biotechnology: EU Not A Model To Africa, Says Ebegba, NABMA DG
By Abdallah el-Kurebe
The Director General and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NABMA), Mr. Rufus Ebegba has said that Africa cannot emulate the European Union (EU) on its non-adoption of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) because EU has other alternatives.
The DG spoke with Newsdiaryonline in a conversation, explaining that while the EU had other alternatives to adopting modern biotechnology, Africa had none.
“Africa should not emulate the European Union (EU) and should not take EU as a model in the adoption of GMOs. This is because the EU has other alternatives and for political reasons, do not wish to adopt modern biotechnology crops. EU countries consume GMOS so, it is not that modern biotechnology is bad,” Ebegba emphasied.
While stressing that the position of the EU countries was not scientific, he advised that “Africa should adopt the safe aspect of modern biotechnology in order to boost their economy.”
