The National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) has successfully trained 28 livestock farmers from Enugu State on the application of artificial insemination technology to enhance livestock productivity.
The week-long training, held at NAPRI headquarters in Shika, Zaria, ran from Monday, November 28, to Friday, November 29, 2024.
The training was facilitated by the Enugu State government through the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES).
Artificial insemination is a climate-smart breeding technology aimed at rapidly upgrading indigenous livestock breeds while improving reproductive efficiency.
Dr. Nnamani Nnaemeka, representing the L-PRES State Coordinator, described NAPRI as an “excellent training ground” for advancing livestock development.
He emphasized the Enugu State government’s commitment to initiatives that improve the livestock subsector.
Speaking at the event, the Head of the Artificial Insemination Unit at NAPRI, Dr. Yusha’u Abubakar noted that the benefits of the technology include efficient breeding and improved rearing systems.
This, he said will boost farmer income and enhance both household and national food security.
Dr. Abubakar commended the participants for their active engagement during the training and expressed gratitude to Enugu L-PRES for its support.
He noted that NAPRI’s practical training programs continue to attract farmers, researchers, and academics nationwide and internationally, contributing to the development of livestock farming.
