The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has released 200,000 bags of rice to victims of recent floods in the Northeastern states of Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, and Taraba.
The Managing Director of NEDC, Mr. Mohammed Alkali, presented the grains and other relief items to the affected states on Wednesday in Maiduguri.
Alkali listed additional relief items, which include 150,000 cartons of macaroni and spaghetti, 250,000 gallons of vegetable oil, as well as mats, blankets, mosquito nets, and clothing materials for both adults and children.
He emphasized that lawmakers from both the state and national levels, representing the geopolitical zone, would be involved in the distribution process to ensure fair treatment across their constituencies.
Alkali, who recently concluded a tour of the states affected by the floods, explained that this support is part of the commission’s immediate measures to assist the victims.
“The commission has both short-term and long-term plans for the region, and this immediate support is part of our short-term efforts. Further support will follow,” Alkali said.
He added that due to the recent massive flooding in Maiduguri, caused by the breakdown of the Alau Dam, the commission had to act swiftly to provide relief.
