….Flood: FG gives palliatives to 80 cattle farmers in Oyo
The Federal Government, on Friday, gave palliatives to 80 cattle farmers affected by the 2022 flood disaster in Oyo State.
The palliatives were given to the beneficiaries on behalf of the federal government by Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) at Moore Plantation, Apata, Ibadan, on Friday.
Addressing the beneficiaries, the FMAFS Coordinator in the state, Dr Florence Kakulu, said that the cattle farmers, who were victims of the 2022 flood disaster, were carefully selected across the state.
Kakulu said that each of them would get three bags of cotton seed cake, three blocks of salt lick and cash.
She expressed the hope that the gesture would ease the burdens brought on the farmers by the flood disaster.
The coordinator said that the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, commiserated with the livestock farmers who lost their hard-earned fortunes to the flood disaster.
Kakulu said that the minister was aware of the pains the farmers were going through as a result of the economic losses in their businesses, occasioned by the flood.
She said that the gesture was part of the ministry’s desire to cushion the effects of the natural disaster on the affected persons.
“On our part, we shall remain steadfast in partnering with you to promote optimum yield as well as boost economic prosperity in the livestock industry.
“The gesture is President Bola Tinubu’s immediate short-term intervention and his aspiration to drive his administration’s renewed hope agenda in the overall interest of the farmers in particular and Nigerians in general,” she said.
The coordinator said that the global effects of climate change had made it imperative for stakeholders in the livestock sub-sector to be proactive in mitigating its impacts.
Also speaking, the FMAFS Deputy Director, Department of Animal Husbandry, Mr Ibinade Akeem, called on the cattle farmers to always feed their cattle with right supplements for them to be healthy.
In his reaction, the South-West Coordinator of Cattle Breeders and Dealers Association, Alhaji Salaudeen Moruf, appreciated the ministry for the gesture.
Moruf said that the federal government, in the past, only recognised crops farmers, but now associating with cattle breeders and dealers, and assisting them when necessary.
In his remarks, Oyo State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Olasunkanmi Olaleye, represented by Mrs O. Akinloye, called on the farmers to always join associations for them to benefit from government’s assistance.
Also speaking, Oyo State Chairman of Miyetti Allah Association, Raheem Abubakar, pledged the association’s commitment to peaceful coexistence in the state, adding that there could not be development without peace.
