Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, joined world leaders in Rome to commemorate World Food Day 2025 and the 80th anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), reaffirming the country’s commitment to innovation, resilience, and partnerships for sustainable food systems.
Speaking at the event, Senator Kyari said Nigeria, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, remains steadfast in advancing agricultural transformation through technology adoption, climate-smart solutions, and inclusive food security strategies.
The Minister emphasized that Nigeria’s focus aligns with this year’s World Food Day theme, highlighting the need to build resilient food systems that ensure accessibility, affordability, and nutrition for all citizens.
FAO Director-General Dr. Qu Dongyu used the occasion to call for urgent global alignment with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, stressing that stronger collaboration among nations was essential to address hunger, poverty, and climate challenges. He also unveiled the FAO Food and Agriculture Museum, designed to promote public awareness of global food heritage and innovation in agriculture.
Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella urged world leaders to deepen cooperation in tackling food insecurity and fostering global solidarity, while Pope Leo XIV appealed for compassion and humanitarian commitment in addressing the growing number of people affected by hunger and conflict-induced crises.
The event, which brought together heads of state, ministers, development partners, and agricultural experts, underscored the FAO’s eight-decade journey in promoting global food security and sustainable agricultural development.
