The Enugu State Government has decided to create special food and nutrition units in some ministries, following the national food policy.

The government also announced plans to give 20,000 personal computers to 20,000 civil servants as part of efforts to fully digitize the public service.

These decisions were shared with journalists by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu; the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo; and the Head of Service, Dr. Godwin Anigbo, after the State Executive Council meeting at the weekend.

Ekweremadu explained that the Food and Nutrition Unit will be set up in certain ministries to work together towards ending poverty in the state, especially by ensuring food security.

Some of the ministries involved in this food programme include: Ministry of Human Development and Poverty Eradication, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Trade, Investment and Industry, Ministry of Budget and Planning, Ministry of Information and Communication, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro Industrialization.

According to him, these ministries are important to the governor’s plan to provide free meals in the new Smart Green schools once they begin operations.

The Head of Service, Dr. Anigbo, said the 20,000 computers will help bring the state’s digitisation plan into full effect.

He added that using technology will make the public service more productive and help track workers’ performance. He said the civil service plays a key role in carrying out government policies and reforms, and the government is committed to this process.

Meanwhile, the state government has also thanked President Bola Tinubu for appointing Prof. Simon Ortuanya, an indigene of Enugu North, as the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

Dr. Agbo said the State Executive Council is grateful to the President for choosing someone they consider an illustrious son of the state for this important role.
