Staff and students of the Anambra State Polytechnic (AnsPoly), Mgbakwu, have called on the government to provide irrigation facilities to farmers to help boost food production in Nigeria.
They made the appeal on Thursday during the second edition of the institution’s New Yam (Iwaji) Festival.
Speaking to journalists, Igwe Chuka Ameke, the ‘traditional ruler’ of AnsPoly, said increased agricultural productivity would enhance food security and reduce poverty and crime.
Ameke said the festival was held to appreciate God for a successful farming season and a bumper harvest, in line with Igbo cultural values.
“This is the second edition of our new yam festival. It is our special way of thanking God for a bountiful harvest this farming season and celebrating ourselves.
“We call on all levels of government to support farmers with irrigation facilities because we cannot achieve sustainability by relying solely on natural rainfall.
“As Igwe AnsPoly, I encourage everyone—civil servants, teachers, students—to engage in farming to guarantee food security,” he said.
In her remarks, the Rector of AnsPoly, Dr. Njideka Chiekeze, expressed delight at the beauty and success of the festival.
Chiekeze said the event reflected the spirit of peace and unity within the institution and praised the organizers for promoting cultural values in the academic community.
“Ceremonies like this do not only remind us of our values as a people, they also benefit our health. Dancing helps to normalize blood pressure.
“I thank those who organized this event, especially those who conceived the idea of having an AnsPoly Igwe and cabinet,” she added.
The festival, which began with a royal dance by the Igwe and his cabinet, featured traditional performances, Igbo delicacies such as roasted yam and sauce, and the conferment of chieftaincy titles.
