The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) is asking the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to help introduce biometric ID cards for dockworkers and seafarers.
MWUN president-general, Francis Bunu Abi, led a team to visit NIMASA’s director-general, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, and his team.
During the visit, Abi stressed that biometric registration is important to identify real dockworkers and seafarers and to stop impostors from gaining access.
He explained that this new system would improve security, reduce theft, and help create a safer business environment at Nigerian ports.
Abi also talked about the union’s partnership with the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) to build a Seafarers Recreational Center in Apapa.
This center, supported by NIMASA, will give seafarers a relaxing place to visit while in port and also bring some economic benefits to the union. Dr. Mobereola confirmed NIMASA’s support for the project, which began under the previous director-general.
The visit showed that MWUN and NIMASA have a strong working relationship.
Dr. Mobereola also congratulated Abi on winning his election and said he looks forward to more cooperation between the two groups to improve Nigeria’s maritime industry.
