Sokoto State is in mourning after a tragic boat accident claimed several lives in Kojiyo Ward, Goronyo Local Government Area.
The boat, carrying many passengers across the river, capsized midway, leading to deaths and the loss of property.
A local resident, Abubakar, said many people drowned while others are still missing as search and rescue teams continue to work. The exact number of victims has not yet been confirmed.
“This is a great tragedy for our community,” another resident said, describing the mood in Kojiyo as sad and tense.
Even though official figures have not been released, prayers have been offered for the deceased, and sympathizers are visiting families who lost their loved ones.
An official of the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), who did not want to be named, confirmed the incident.
“I just received the report. Both NEMA and SEMA are already mobilizing to the scene and will release an official statement soon,” the source said.
Authorities have assured that more updates will be shared as rescue operations continue.
