Nigeria has been re-elected into Part 2 of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). ICAO is a global agency that ensures air travel is safe, secure, and sustainable.

Mr. Ben Tukur was re-elected as Nigeria’s representative at the ongoing 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montreal, Canada.

The announcement was made in Abuja by Mr. Tunde Moshood, the Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo.

According to the statement, Tukur won after a tough contest involving 11 other African nations.

“Tukur, who has been Nigeria’s voice at ICAO, will continue to hold the country’s seat on the Council,” the statement read.

He secured 163 votes out of 185 member states, a result that shows strong international trust in Nigeria’s aviation leadership.

Nigeria now joins 11 other countries in Part 2 of the ICAO Council, including Egypt and South Africa.

Moshood said the victory highlights the strength of Nigeria’s aviation diplomacy and its alliances within ICAO.

After the results, Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo called it \“a proud moment for Nigeria and Africa.”

He said the re-election proves Nigeria’s dedication to international aviation growth, safety, security, and sustainability.

He added that Nigeria’s seat on the Council means the country will continue to help shape global aviation policies and also push Africa’s interests.

The ICAO Council is the governing body of the organization, with 36 Member States elected every three years.

For elections, the Council is divided into three categories to ensure fairness.

Part 1 includes the biggest aviation players like the U.S., China, France, and Germany.
Part 2, where Nigeria sits, includes countries that contribute major facilities for international air navigation.
Part 3 ensures all regions of the world are fairly represented.
