The Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has disbursed N96 million in soft loans to eight Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators to strengthen waste collection and environmental sanitation within the council.
The initiative provides each operator with N12 million as working capital to enhance operational efficiency.
The Executive Chairman of Orile-Agege LCDA, Mr. Idowu Akinola, said the scheme is designed to improve service delivery and ensure a cleaner environment. The loans will be repaid over 12 months following an initial grace period, with monthly instalments of N1 million.
“We are supporting PSP operators as part of our commitment to environmental sanitation and improving waste management in our LCDA,” he said.
Akinola explained that the council adopted a multi-stakeholder approach involving Community Development Associations, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), and residents to ensure the programme’s success. Enforcement measures have also been introduced to curb indiscriminate waste disposal.
Speaking at the event, LAWMA’s representative, Mr. Babatunde Suleiman, praised the initiative, noting that other local governments are seeking to replicate the model. He urged timely payments to operators to improve efficiency and service delivery.
The National President of the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAMN), Dr. Olubenga Adebola, described the initiative as innovative and impactful, highlighting that effective waste management depends on strong collaboration among stakeholders.
Mrs. Abimbola Adebimpe, Head of Department Environment, LCDA, emphasised that residents must comply with sanitation regulations, warning that full enforcement would soon begin.
Mr. Oladumeji Adigun, Chairman of the Committee on Environment, said the programme is critical to achieving a cleaner and healthier community through proper collaboration between PSP operators and residents.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude and pledged to work with the LCDA to maintain a waste-free environment.
The event was attended by market leaders, faith-based organisation heads, and LCDA management and staff.
