The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, has called on the state government to prioritize environmental management by addressing indiscriminate waste disposal and unchecked tree felling across the state.
Rising from its congress held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at the NUJ Press Centre in Sokoto, the union emphasized the urgent need for additional refuse dump sites to curb the unhealthy practice of dumping waste in unauthorized locations.
The congress further urged the state government to strictly enforce environmental laws against indiscriminate tree felling, describing the trend as a major contributor to desertification, flooding, and climate-related challenges facing Sokoto.
In addition, the union stressed the importance of expanding drainage systems and ensuring regular desilting of existing ones to prevent urban flooding, particularly during the rainy season.
To sustain cleaner and healthier surroundings, the NUJ advocated for greater community participation in sanitation activities and environmental upkeep.
The congress reaffirmed its commitment to promoting responsible reporting on environmental issues and pledged to work with stakeholders to ensure Sokoto adopts sustainable practices that safeguard public health and the ecosystem.
