The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, has issued a stern warning to boat operators and passengers nationwide, urging them to desist from travelling on Nigerian waterways without wearing life jackets.
In a statement released by Dr. Bolaji Akinola, Media and Communications Adviser to the Minister, Oyetola emphasized this safety directive during the distribution of 3,500 life jackets on Friday in Bayelsa State.
He noted that the ongoing nationwide distribution of 42,000 life jackets by the Federal Government is part of a comprehensive effort to improve safety on inland waterways and prevent boat accidents.
“This initiative is a continuation of the Federal Government’s strategic efforts to curb recurring boat mishaps and safeguard lives in coastal and riverine communities,” Oyetola stated.
He described water transportation as vital to the livelihood of many Nigerians, especially those in riverine areas, and stressed the importance of the life jacket campaign as a proactive safety measure.
“These life jackets are not decorative items — they are essential tools for survival. With them, we are equipping fishermen, traders, students, and transport operators with the means to stay safe. Safety is everyone’s responsibility,” he added.
The Minister directed water marshals at riverbanks to strictly enforce the “No Life Jackets, No Movement” policy, stressing that compliance is non-negotiable.
He also applauded the Bayelsa State Government for establishing a Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, citing the state’s extensive maritime resources and strategic location.
Oyetola further lauded the government’s commitment to developing the Agge Deep Seaport, describing it as a transformative project that holds the potential to reshape the region’s economic future.
“The Agge Deep Seaport will serve as a key maritime hub, driving international trade, easing port congestion, generating employment, attracting investment, and spurring development across the Niger Delta and Southern Nigeria,” he said.
