The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) says most parts of Nigeria will experience thunderstorms and heavy rainfall from Monday through Wednesday, with Benue, Taraba, and Cross River at heightened risk of flooding.
In a weather outlook released Sunday in Abuja, NiMet predicted cloudy conditions, intermittent sunshine, and light to moderate rain across the northern, central, and southern regions.
Northern Nigeria
Residents of Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi, Gombe and Taraba should expect morning thunderstorms and moderate rain on Monday, followed by isolated evening storms in Kebbi, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Taraba.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, Adamawa, Kaduna and Taraba may see light morning showers with afternoon thunderstorms in Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, and Bauchi.
Central States
NiMet projects a mix of sunshine, clouds, and rainfall across the central region.
Morning thunderstorms and light showers are expected in Niger, Kwara, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kogi, Benue, and Nasarawa, with moderate afternoon storms in Niger, Kwara, FCT, Benue, Plateau, Kogi, and Nasarawa.
Southern Nigeria
Cloudy skies and light morning rain are forecast for Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, and Cross River. Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are likely across the entire south.
On subsequent days, Edo, Ondo, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom should expect light showers in the morning and stronger thunderstorms by afternoon.
Safety Advisory
NiMet urged residents to secure loose objects and switch off electrical appliances during storms and avoid standing under tall trees or driving through flood-prone roads.
Farmers were urged to delay fertiliser or pesticide application until after rain while airline operators were asked to obtain airport-specific weather updates for flight safety.
