The National Mathematical Centre (NMC) has announced that Nigeria won six medals at the 2026 Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) held in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.
The centre disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by its Controller of Information and Public Relations, Mr Onyekachi Njoku.
Njoku quoted the Acting Director and Chief Executive of the NMC, Prof. Benjamin Oyelami, as commending the Federal Government for funding the preparation and participation of the Nigerian team.
Oyelami pledged the centre’s commitment to strengthening students’ preparation for future international mathematics competitions to enable Nigeria to win more laurels.
He added that the centre had been repositioned to enhance the teaching, learning, and research of mathematics and mathematical sciences to improve students’ performance at all levels of education in the country.
Oyelami said Chimfimnanya Aghaduno won two silver medals — one in PAMO and another in the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad for Girls (PAMO-G).
He added that Damaris Oyerinde also won two silver medals — one in PAMO and another in PAMO-G.
According to him, Lius Liu won a silver medal in PAMO, while Kingsley Enwere clinched a bronze medal in the competition.
The students qualified through the Nigerian National Mathematical Sciences Olympiad organised by the NMC to select the country’s representatives for the continental competition.
Oyelami described PAMO as Africa’s flagship annual mathematics competition for secondary school students. It is organised by the African Mathematical Union through its Commission on the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad.
He said the competition provides a platform for young mathematicians across Africa to showcase their talents and celebrate academic excellence.
Each participating country fields a team of six students, while the highest-performing female contestant is crowned the African Mathematics Queen.
Nigeria also earned a bronze medal in the PAMO-G ranking, which recognises female contestants based on the same examination papers and marking scheme.
