The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, has announced plans to establish Africa’s first local insulin production facility in Nigeria.
Speaking at a reception in Abuja to mark the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Yu said the project would transform diabetes care, reduce complications, and end Nigeria’s dependence on imported insulin.
“This facility will position Nigeria as a hub for African medical biotechnology,” he said, noting it as one of the tangible benefits of China–Nigeria cooperation. He also cited the newly completed Abuja Water Supply Project, which now delivers clean water to nearly three million people daily.
Yu highlighted China’s long-standing support for Africa’s self-driven development and reflected on the symbolism of both countries celebrating their national days on October 1.
He also shared stories of growing people-to-people ties, including Nigerian train driver Issah Fatimah Abiola — honoured in China as a “Friendship Envoy” — and Ibrahim Ismail, a Kano student fluent in Mandarin.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, represented by Sen. Babangida Hussaini, conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s greetings and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening cooperation with China in infrastructure, energy, agriculture, education, defence, trade, and investment.
