The Federal Government says the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) document will outline the benefits of investing in climate change adaptation and create a win-win scenario for all Nigerians.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Environment, Mr. Mahmud Kambari, stated this on Tuesday in Abuja during a Technical Review Workshop on the NAP document for Nigeria.
Kambari, who was represented by Dr. Iniobong Abiola-Awe, Director of Climate Change in the ministry, said the government had also developed an adaptation financing strategy to ensure full funding for adaptation initiatives across all sectors.
“A monitoring and evaluation framework has also been developed to track progress made under the adaptation plan and ensure we move in the right direction in line with global best practices,” he said.
He explained that as Nigeria’s NAP document nears completion, it identifies the potential costs of inaction and the losses the country could face if urgent adaptation measures are not taken.
“The national adaptation process seeks to ensure that Nigeria continues to take action to prepare for and adjust to the current and future impacts of climate change,” Kambari added.
He noted that the plan, supported by the Green Climate Fund and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), builds on three major priority areas identified in the earlier National Adaptation Strategy and Plan of Action (NASPA).
Kambari expressed optimism that the outcome of the workshop would further enrich the NAP document and position Nigeria for its submission to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
