Niger government has procured Aluminium Sulphate and High Test Hypochlorite (HTH Chlorine) to improve water supply and address scarcity in the state.
Alhaji Akilu Musa-Kuta, Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Water Resources and Dams Development, disclosed during an inspection of the items in Minna on Wednesday.
9news Nigeria reports that Aluminium sulphate is a white crystalline chemical compound commonly used in water treatment and purification while HTH Chlorine is a disinfectant used to purify water.
He said the water scarcity experienced during the dry season had become worrisome, hence the need for proactive measures despite limited resources.
Musa-Kuta said Gov. Umaru Bago of Niger was working tirelessly to revive all waterworks and Biwater supply schemes across the state to ensure that residents have access to affordable, reliable and potable water.
According to him, the procurement of the chemicals is part of the state government ongoing efforts to improve water treatment and supply.
He said the move would ensure that citizens have access to safe and clean drinking water, noting that the government action reflects its commitment to tackling the perennial water scarcity affecting the people.
The permanent secretary said the ministry had so far received 1,200 bags of Aluminium Sulphate and 30 drums of Calcium Hypochlorite (HTH).
He recalled that some parts of Minna had started benefiting from improved water supply, including the College of Education area, parts of Tunga, Chanchaga, Tungan Gauro, Gidan Madara, UK Bello-Labour House and Mobil area.
He said parts of Kwangila, Old Airport Quarters, Kuta Road, Anguwan Daji, Central Mosque area, David Mark Road, El-Amin School area and Tundun Natsira had also benefited.
He added that M.I. Wushishi Estate, Mandala Road, Himma School area, Barikin Saleh, Kpakungu, Darussalam, Oduoye Quarters, Sauka Kahuta, London Street, Adamawa Road and NIPOST Quarters,
“Okada Road, parts of Type B Quarters, Government House, GRA, Natty Farm, Fadikpe A&B, Kotun Kashew, Kpakungu and Anguwan Sarki have benefited.
He assured that more communities would soon benefit from the improved water supply as efforts were being intensified to ensure even distribution across the state.
