The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating its resettlement housing programme aimed at addressing the ecological challenges faced by flood-prone communities within its operational areas.
Managing Director/CEO of the Commission, Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, made this known at the N-HYPPADEC Area Office in Bida during a stakeholder meeting on the Muregi and Ketso resettlement housing schemes. The session focused on developing a clear framework for completing ongoing projects and distributing already finished housing units in the two communities.
Yelwa expressed concern over the delays in allocating the completed homes and assured residents that the Commission was fully committed to resolving all outstanding issues. He explained that N-HYPPADEC had earlier requested the Niger State Government coordinators, traditional institutions and the local government council to agree on a widely acceptable distribution formula. Although empowered to allocate the houses, he said the Commission preferred not to interfere in the local decision-making process.
“We understand the frustration of the Ketso and Muregi communities regarding the distribution of these homes,” he said. “Our goal is to work with relevant stakeholders to ensure fair and efficient solutions that reflect the needs and voices of both communities.”
He also emphasized the importance of transparency and collaboration to ensure all affected families benefit from the resettlement programme.
Representatives of the Niger State Government commended N-HYPPADEC for sustaining interventions that have revived long-abandoned resettlement dreams. They noted that although the housing schemes were conceived nearly two decades ago, the Commission’s commitment had restored hope to the communities.
The Executive Chairman of Mokwa Local Government, Comrade Jibril Abdullahi Muregi, represented by his Chief of Staff, also expressed appreciation to N-HYPPADEC for convening the meeting. He pledged the council’s readiness to fulfill its obligations and support the effective utilization of the completed projects.
