The Lagos State Government has indefinitely shut down the Itedo Market in Lekki for repeated environmental violations and illegal roadside trading.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the closure in a post on his X handle on Saturday, stating that traders repeatedly ignored the state’s environmental laws.
He said five individuals were arrested during the enforcement exercise, while three Black Marias were deployed to maintain order and prevent further illegal activities.
“Lagos will not tolerate disregard for environmental regulations or unauthorized street trading. Our commitment to restoring sanity, ensuring public safety, and upholding the rule of law remains unwavering,” Wahab said.
The move is part of the government’s broader clean-up campaign across Lagos, which has recently seen the closure of markets and abattoirs for unsanitary practices and illegal waste disposal. Offenders now risk fines of up to ₦250,000 or three months’ imprisonment.
