The Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN) has provided solar-powered boreholes and renovated two major mosques in Kwanar Dangora, Bebeji Local Government Area, and in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State. This is part of its effort to fight open defecation.
The projects, done under the WOFAN ICON2 initiative, include the construction of toilets to reduce open defecation, installation of solar-powered boreholes, provision of solar lighting, supply of carpets, and other basic facilities. These are meant to give people safe drinking water and improve worship and community activities.
WOFAN’s Executive Director, Dr. Salamatu Garba, in a statement over the weekend, urged the community committees to take good care of the facilities and keep them safe.
Speaking on her behalf, Mr. Rabiu Sule said the facilities were designed to improve sanitation, hygiene, safe water access, and community cooperation. He added that the new boreholes, toilets, and worship centers would promote wellbeing and unity among the people.
He explained that each solar-powered borehole has 21 water points, enough to serve the daily needs of the communities and nearby schools. This, he said, will ease the struggle children face in fetching water and help reduce the number of out-of-school children.
The worship centers, according to him, will also serve as resting places for travelers and provide services to both locals and visitors, especially traders who come to the WOFAN markets. With water and sanitation facilities nearby, farmers and traders will also benefit.
The District Head of Bebeji, Mr. Yusuf Bayero, thanked WOFAN for the project. He praised Dr. Garba for her continuous support to communities and for encouraging a sense of ownership to ensure the facilities last.
He said: “On behalf of the people of Bebeji, I thank Dr. Salamatu Garba for this initiative. We know the great work she has been doing for our people. We pray that Allah blesses her and rewards her abundantly.”
Also, the District Head of Kura, Mr. Lami Abubakar Bayero, represented by Usman Abdulmalik, thanked WOFAN for its support and prayed for the organization’s growth and global recognition.
Similarly, the Chief Imam of Imawa Juma’a Mosque, Sama’ila Dauda, expressed gratitude to Dr. Garba for her intervention and prayed for Allah’s guidance in all her efforts.
