Kaduna distributes 100 clean cookstoves for environment day

The Kaduna State Government distributed 100 clean cookstoves to women and persons with disabilities on Friday as part of activities marking the 2026 World Environment Day.

Mrs. Linda Yakubu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, stated that the initiative aims to promote clean energy, reduce pressure on forests, and improve public health.

Yakubu explained that the theme for 2026, “Inspired by Nature: For Climate. For Our Future,” emphasizes the need for nature-based solutions to environmental challenges.

She noted that climate change continues to manifest through rising temperatures, biodiversity loss, land degradation, and flooding.

According to her, governments, institutions, communities, and individuals must work together to protect the environment for current and future generations.

“The distribution of 100 clean cookstoves underscores the importance of transitioning to cleaner, more efficient energy sources and contributes to climate change mitigation,” she said.

Yakubu urged stakeholders to turn commitments on environmental sustainability into tangible actions.

She added that sustainable environmental management cannot be achieved by the government alone but requires support from communities, development partners, civil society organizations, and the private sector.

In his remarks, Abubakar Buba, Kaduna’s Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, said the state was making steady progress in renewable energy deployment.

He noted that all 255 Primary Healthcare Centres in Kaduna have been equipped with solar power systems to ensure reliable electricity for healthcare services.

Buba attributed this achievement to Governor Uba Sani’s administration’s commitment to expanding renewable energy access.

He also said all 23 local government areas received support to procure and install solar-powered streetlights.

According to him, this initiative is reducing dependence on fossil fuels while enhancing public infrastructure and security.

The commissioner further disclosed that the state government is engaging local and international partners on waste-to-wealth projects aimed at converting waste into electricity, organic fertilizers, and other reusable products.

He stated that these projects would help reduce pollution, create jobs, and promote sustainable agriculture.

World Environment Day is celebrated annually on June 5 to raise awareness and promote action on environmental issues worldwide.
