Mr Sunday Benson, Chairman of Imota Local Council Development Area (LCDA), has urged residents to embrace tree planting and environmental conservation as a collective responsibility toward building a healthier and more sustainable community.
Benson gave the advice in a statement issued to newsmen on Tuesday to commemorate the 2026 Tree Planting Day.
According to him, this year’s theme: “Trees for Lagos; Our City, Our Responsibility,” highlights the need for collective action in protecting the environment through tree planting and preservation.
“The theme reminds us that every resident has a role to play in creating a greener, cleaner and more resilient Lagos through the planting and preservation of trees,” he said.
Benson stated that trees play a critical role in mitigating the effects of climate change, improving air quality, preventing soil erosion, conserving biodiversity, and enhancing the beauty of the environment.
He therefore encouraged residents, schools, Community Development Associations (CDAs), faith-based organisations and corporate bodies to cultivate the habit of planting and nurturing trees for the benefit of present and future generations.
The council chairman also urged residents to support initiatives aimed at promoting a cleaner and greener environment by protecting existing trees and discouraging indiscriminate felling.
He called for greater collaboration with governments at all levels in safeguarding the environment.
Benson reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to environmental sustainability, saying it would continue to implement policies and programmes that promote a greener and healthier Imota.
He expressed optimism that collective efforts by residents would help preserve the environment, strengthen communities and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
