At least four individuals have drowned in Gombe State following the onset of the rainy season, the Gombe State Police Command has confirmed.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi said in a statement on Tuesday that four drowning incidents were reported in the communities of Hayin Kwarin-Misau, Bojude, Bajoga, and Difa—located in the Akko, Kwami, Funakaye, and Yamaltu-Deba local government areas.
All victims were children and teenagers who drowned in rivers, erosion sites, or unprotected water channels.
Abdullahi urged heightened caution around water bodies during the rainy season: “This is in view of the rainy season, as cases of accidental drowning continue to pose a serious public safety concern.”
He emphasized several safety precautions to prevent further loss of life.
He urged residents to refrain from swimming in open or unregulated water bodies during heavy rainfall, supervise children closely and discourage outdoor play near water.
He also advised them to avoid walking, driving, or swimming through flooded zones—currents and depths can be deceptive.
Furthermore, he urged them to report exposed erosion sites or dangerous drainage channels to authorities.
Abdullahi reaffirmed the police command’s commitment to protecting lives and property in Gombe State.
