The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says flooding has displaced no fewer than 3,633 people from five communities in Zango Kataf local government area of Kaduna State.
NEMA Northwest Zonal Coordinator Imam Garki made this known in an interview on Friday in Kaduna.
He said that the flooding that occurred on August 25 affected Fadan Tsoho, Zonzon, Zangon Kataf, Unguwan Wakili and Zonkwa communities.
“No fewer than 3,633 persons were displaced due to flooding and houses were damaged,” he said.
He said that the agency in collaboration with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency assessment team discovered that the affected victims had taken refuge with relatives in neighbouring villages.
Garki also said that invaluable household property was damaged, while some houses were submerged.
“The assessment team also reported that farm lands, livestock that include sheep and goats were also lost to the flooding with many of them still missing.
“We have seen the level of damage in the area, we would ensure that NEMA would not leave the victims in their state, we will do our best to assist them,” he promised.
The wake of windstorms so far in Nigrria, heavy rains and flood events of this year have by 28th August 2024, directly affected over 45,808 households (186,370 individuals) with 29 individuals dead and several injured across 66 IDP sites and 311 host communities in 34 LGAs in Borno, 18 LGAs in Adamawa, and 3 LGAs in Yobe states. These incidents resulted in varying degrees of damage to camp infrastructure, including 49,730 shelters, safe spaces, and WASH facilities (600 water points, 1,200 latrines, and 800 showers).
