Eyewitnesses reported a grim scene on Thursday morning, with bodies seen in various parts of the town and families frantically searching for missing loved ones. The extent of the damage has plunged the community into mourning as emergency response teams began search and recovery operations at dawn.
Several persons are feared dead, though the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has deployed personnel to the affected area to assist with rescue efforts and provide relief.
Speaking on the incident, the agency’s Public Relations Officer, Hussaini Ibrahim, confirmed the ongoing operations but stated that the number of fatalities had not yet been established.
“Our team is on the ground conducting rescue missions, but we cannot confirm the number of lives lost at this time,” he said.
The incident marks one of the most severe flood disasters to hit Mokwa in recent years, prompting urgent calls for enhanced disaster preparedness and infrastructure resilience in the area.
