The De Renaissance Patriots Foundation has issued a stern call to action for the Lagos State Government, urging immediate and effective measures to address the recurrent flooding in Lagos Island and other parts of the state, including Lekki Phase I.
Reacting to the persistent flooding concerns, in a statement by the President and Secretary General, Adelani Adeniji-Adele, and Yomi Tokosi made available to ASHENEWS on Monday, the Foundation expressed deep concern over the annual flooding, particularly around the Ojo/Anikantamo axis in Lagos Island, which remains unresolved despite its severe impact on residents’ lives, commerce, and health.
The foundation questioned the government’s commitment to tackling this issue, emphasizing the need for a permanent solution.
The Foundation highlighted the environmental implications of the flooding and criticized the lack of effective mitigation strategies.
The statement underscored that the continuous flooding is not merely a natural phenomenon but is exacerbated by human activities, such as the construction of the Third Mainland Bridge, the Adeniji-Adele Road, and the Ilubirin Housing Scheme.

These interventions, according to the foundation, were undertaken without adequate consideration of their environmental impact.
The foundation questioned the motives behind the government’s inaction, suggesting that state actors often use disasters for photo opportunities rather than implementing long-term solutions.
They called on the government to save Lagos Island from environmental degradation and urged for the cessation of indiscriminate land reclamation activities that contribute to the flooding.
The ongoing flooding has caused significant distress among residents, leading to disrupted lives and economic losses.
Adeniji-Adele and Tokosi, stressed that the situation demands immediate and effective government intervention to protect the heritage and well-being of Lagos Island’s inhabitants.
They further demanded immediate government action to address the flooding and drainage blockade issues seriously.
The foundation also called for better waste management practices, noting that improper waste disposal contributes to drainage blockages.
They specifically pointed to ongoing reclamation and drainage projects in Park View Estate, which are exacerbating the flooding issue.
The De Renaissance Patriots Foundation criticized the government’s efforts as ineffective and wasteful, demanding more comprehensive and sustainable measures to tackle the environmental challenges facing Lagos Island and its environs.
They called on both the government and the public to work together to protect their environment and rights.
