Mr Enitan Pelumi, a corps member serving in Ede North LGA of Osun State, has built and donated a borehole to Abere Community as his Community Development Service (CDS) project.
During the project inauguration on Monday, Pelumi (Reg. No. OS/25A/2397, 2025 Batch A Stream II) explained that the initiative was aimed at tackling the community’s persistent water scarcity.
The Chairman of Abere Ede Community, Mr Alabi Adesoji, described the gesture as highly impactful, noting that access to potable water had long been a major challenge for residents.
He added that the borehole would greatly reduce the burden of fetching water, while improving hygiene and overall wellbeing.
Adesoji urged other serving corps members—and those awaiting deployment—to emulate Pelumi by making positive contributions to their host communities.
“We assure Pelumi that this project will be jealously guarded even after he leaves Osun. It is now a collective asset for our people,” he said.
The Osun NYSC Coordinator, Mr Ita Kubiangha, called the intervention a transformative one for Abere residents.
He emphasized that CDS remains a core programme of the NYSC scheme and encouraged corps members to identify genuine community needs and address them effectively.
“Pelumi has exemplified what the scheme stands for by identifying a pressing need in his host community and taking concrete steps to resolve it,” Kubiangha said.
He commended local stakeholders for their support and assured the community of more impactful projects in the future.
Kubiangha also revealed that NYSC headquarters had deployed an officer to inspect the project, describing Pelumi as “exemplary among his peers”.
The Traditional Ruler of Abere, Oba Adefemi Adelakin, praised the corps member for taking remarkable steps to address a critical community challenge.
He said the landlords’ association and the entire community deeply appreciated the gesture and offered prayers for Pelumi’s future success.
Oba Adelakin urged other corps members to ensure their service year leaves a positive and lasting impact on their host communities.
