The people of Obeagu Awkunanaw in Enugu South are upset because they say a company, Private Estates International West Africa Ltd. (PEIWA), took over their ancestral land illegally. The land is now part of the Enugu Lifestyle and Golf City project.
In a reply to a public statement made by PEIWA on July 21, 2025, the community accused the company of taking the land by force and making false claims about owning it.
The community said, “We are speaking on behalf of everyone in Obeagu Awkunanaw. We saw a notice from PEIWA claiming they own 1,097 hectares of our ancestral land. This land was wrongly renamed ‘Enugu Lifestyle and Golf City.’ They also warned people not to buy land from us or do business with us.”
The community restated that they inherited the land and listed the areas involved: Agbana, Ugwuorie, Onususu, Akparata, Isi Oke, Ofia Ogonogo, Ofia Aru, Ururo, Orji, Ngene Uchoo, Ngene Ogwe, Iduru, Ihu Odeje, and more.
They said PEIWA claimed they were bringing development but instead just divided and sold the land for profit. The community said they received no benefits, and the state government also got nothing in return.
The leaders said they are taking legal steps to get their land back. They believe justice will be served and that truth will win in the end.
They also said PEIWA is lying about being the only legal developer. They support other companies like Dignified Garden Estate Ltd., Star Residence Estate, and Consistent Experts Limited, who they say are legitimate and respectful of the community.
When asked for a response, PEIWA’s Managing Director, Kingsley Eze, declined to argue with the community and said questions should be directed to the Enugu State Ministry of Lands.
