Many people, especially children, have gone missing after flood resulting from heavy rain fall for more than six hours in parts of Adamawa State on Sunday.
Some victims said that over 600 houses were destroyed by the flood. They barely escaped and got separated from their family members.
Reporters found out that the Adamawa State Police and the 23rd Armoured Brigade in Yola have gone to the affected areas to help residents and provide support.
The police spokesman, Suleiman Nguroje, said on Sunday that trained marine police officers were sent to the flooded areas to rescue people.
He explained that after the heavy rain hit places like Shagari Low Cost, Sabon Pegi, Modire, and Yolde Pate in Yola South, the Police Commissioner, Morris Dankwambo, ordered marine officers to go to these areas for rescue efforts.
Abubakar Adamu, a resident of Sabon Pegi, cried as he described the disaster. He said many people died, especially children. They are still trying to know the exact number of those who died.
While official numbers haven’t been confirmed yet, some reports suggest that many people died, with children being the most affected.
Another victim, John Audu, said he and his family were sleeping when water suddenly entered their sitting room and his children’s bedroom. He said the water came too fast, and they couldn’t take anything with them.
Last week, the Executive Secretary of Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), Celine Laori, warned people living in lowland areas to move to higher ground. She said flooding was expected to start this month.
Now, residents are begging ADSEMA, the National Emergency Management Agency, and the state government to help by giving them food, shelter, and medical care.
