The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has given food supplies to people who survived a recent flood in Mokwa, a town in Niger State.
While handing over the relief items at the Deputy Governor’s office, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh said he was deeply saddened by the destruction the flood caused.
He said CAN shares in the pain of those affected. The CAN Vice President, Rev. Dr. Stephen Baba Panya, who represented the president, urged other groups and the government to see this tragedy as a reminder that everyone must help each other during hard times.
He said the food donation was a way to show love and support for the victims, especially those most affected by the flood.
He added, “We came to offer our sympathy to the people and government of Niger State, especially those in Mokwa, who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods because of this disaster.”
He explained that CAN’s donation was meant to support what the government, emergency workers, and other kind-hearted Nigerians and organizations are already doing to help.
He also said CAN will keep praying for Niger State, quoting Psalm 146:1, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Barrister Mairo Mohammed Mann, accepted the items on behalf of the Deputy Governor.
She thanked CAN and promised the supplies would be used well.
She also said the state government had kept its promise by releasing one billion naira and had started giving one million naira to each family affected by the flood.
The food items donated by CAN included 20 bags of maize, 20 bags of guinea corn, and 5 bags of beans.
Others who attended the event included the state CAN Vice Chairman Rev. Marcus Joshua, CAN officials, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba Arah, and staff from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and emergency agencies.
