The Anambra State Government says it will commence full implementation of its Environmental Management, Protection and Administration Law, 2024, on Monday.
The Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Felix Odimegwu, announced this during a news briefing in Awka.
“Following extensive sensitization, public education and stakeholder consultations across the state over the past one year, the Ministry of Environment will now apply the provisions of this law fully, firmly and without exception,” he said.
Odimegwu explained that the law is designed to safeguard public health, strengthen climate resilience, prevent flooding and erosion and ensure orderly, sustainable environmental management across all communities.

He said key enforcement areas include Environmental Impact Assessment compliance, stormwater control, runoff management, catchment systems, as well as building setbacks and drainage infrastructure.
Other focus areas are landscaping and green-zone requirements, urban beautification, and regulation of sewage, wastewater and effluent discharge.
The commissioner said enforcement would begin in major urban centres such as Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi and Ekwulobia.
He added that violators—both individuals and corporate bodies—would face fines ranging from ₦500,000 to ₦1 million, or three months’ imprisonment.
