The immediate past president of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) Alumni Association Worldwide, Dr. Olaitan Adesomoju, has donated one million naira for the renovation of the university’s Student Union Building.
During the donation ceremony on Friday, November 8, 2024, Dr. Adesomoju, who served as Vice President of the Student Union during the 1999/2000 academic session, expressed that this gesture was his way of giving back to the institution where his leadership journey began.
“I stand before you with humility and gratitude to give back to my first constituency—the very place where my leadership journey began,” Adesomoju said. “Throughout my journey, I’ve been driven to make a lasting impact. Today, I’m contributing to the renovation of the Student Union Building, just as I’ve contributed to various projects over the last decade for the betterment of the university community.”
Dr. Adesomoju also encouraged other alumni to support FUTA’s growth, highlighting several of his previous contributions. These include the redesign of student ID cards, establishment of the Alumni Event Centre as a revenue-generating hub, renovation of Block C Akindeko Hall, initiation of the Alumni Trust Fund, drilling of a borehole at the FUTA Teaching and Research Farm, and renovation of the Engr. Tunde Babalola basketball and volleyball court for N3.2 million. Currently serving as a member of FUTA’s Governing Council, Adesomoju affirmed his commitment to helping FUTA become a leading global institution.
In response, FUTA Vice-Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji commended Dr Adesomoju for his continued support and for aligning with the university’s needs. She described him as a valuable partner in progress and urged other alumni to emulate his contributions.
“It is our collective responsibility to make FUTA great,” Oladiji stated. “We owe it to future generations to build a FUTA that will outlive us, and this can only be achieved through intentional efforts.” She encouraged student leaders to use the funds judiciously, emphasizing accountability.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Professor David Oke, praised Dr. Adesomoju as a dedicated leader with genuine concern for students’ welfare, promising to oversee the effective use of the donation. Similarly, Student Union President Mr. Adegoroye Abejoye commended Dr. Adesomoju for fulfilling a promise to the student community, noting that the support would inspire current leaders to adopt a more responsive and intellectually driven approach to leadership.
