The State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has directed primary and secondary school teachers to commence an indefinite strike on Monday.
The directive was issued in a communique following an emergency SWEC meeting in Gwagwalada, Abuja, on Friday.
The communique was jointly signed by State Chairman Abdullahi Shafa, State Secretary Margaret Jethro, and State Publicity Secretary Ibukun Adekeye.
Teachers were instructed to comply with the directive and await further instructions. Parents were advised to keep their children at home until further notice. The union emphasized that teachers would remain on strike until all their demands are met.
The decision followed a review of a seven-day ultimatum issued to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike on March 11, which expired on March 29.
While appreciating Wike for implementing the N70,000 minimum wage and paying nine months’ arrears to primary school teachers, the SWEC expressed concern that the Minister’s earlier intervention, which had led to the suspension of a 14-week strike on July 9, 2025, remains unaddressed.
“The Minister constituted a committee on July 7, 2025, to harmonize all outstanding entitlements of primary school teachers within two weeks and to recommend permanent solutions to frequent industrial disputes. The committee completed its work in August 2025, but the report has yet to be made public,” the communique stated.
The union noted that the seven-day ultimatum was prompted by the unexplained delay in implementing the committee’s report and the continued silence on teachers’ legitimate demands amid prevailing economic hardships in the FCT.
SWEC demanded that the Wike-led administration release and implement the report on teachers’ outstanding entitlements. The union also called for the removal of “vacancy” conditions for teacher promotions and a full review of the 2024 promotion exercise by the FCT Civil Service Commission to allow eligible teachers to be promoted without hindrance.
The union expressed disappointment that, following the expiration of the ultimatum on March 19, and an additional 28-day grace period, no substantial response had been received.
“After exhaustive deliberations on these industrial issues, the Council resolved that all public primary and secondary school teachers in the FCT shall, with effect from Monday, proceed on an indefinite strike until our demands are met,” the communique concluded.
