The Edo State Government has announced plans to recruit 3,000 additional teachers to strengthen teaching capacity and improve learning outcomes across public schools in the state.
Governor Monday Okpebholo made this known on Wednesday in Benin when he received the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), led by its State Chairman, Comrade Bernard Ajobiewe.
Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to education, describing it as the cornerstone of human development and emphasizing that teachers remain a top priority in his development agenda.
The governor noted that his administration had renovated several schools and regularized the employment of over 5,000 Edo-STAR teachers who had remained on contract for more than three years under the previous administration.
“Teachers remain a top priority in our development agenda. We are building and renovating schools across Edo, and as infrastructure improves, so must manpower,” he said.
“Our goal is to ensure that no school lacks qualified teachers and that every child receives quality education in a conducive learning environment,” Okpebholo added.
During the visit, Ajobiewe presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to the governor in recognition of his reforms and contributions to repositioning the state’s education sector.
He was accompanied by the Acting Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Edo State chapter, Comrade Jormah Egwahide.
The NUT and NLC leaders commended the governor’s decision to employ 3,000 new teachers, describing it as a welcome development that would enhance the quality of education in public schools.
