Naira trades at N1,838 per pound as markets await US inflation data

The Nigerian naira traded at N1,838 to the British pound at the start of Wednesday’s official foreign exchange session, as currency traders monitored developments in global markets ahead of key United States inflation data.

The rate, recorded on the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) and calculated through the dollar cross rate, represents a slight movement from N1,839 per pound recorded before the holiday break.

The pound’s performance against the naira came as sterling strengthened in international markets, supported by relatively robust UK economic data and broader global uncertainty.

The naira, however, continues to receive support from the monetary and structural measures of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), particularly the country’s high interest-rate environment.

According to market analysis cited by Nairametrics, elevated yields on naira-denominated money market instruments, including Treasury bills, have helped attract foreign portfolio investors into the Nigerian market.

The resulting inflows have improved foreign exchange liquidity and provided additional support for the naira, while the narrowing gap between official and parallel-market rates has reduced incentives for speculative hoarding and arbitrage.

Nigeria’s position as an oil-producing country also remains important to the outlook for the naira, as movements in crude oil prices and production levels directly affect foreign exchange inflows into the economy.

Meanwhile, international currency markets are focused on upcoming US inflation figures and signals from the Federal Reserve on the direction of interest rates.

The British pound was trading below the $1.3665 level against the US dollar, with market participants watching whether sterling can break above the resistance level or face a correction.

Investors are also awaiting a speech by US Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh on Friday, which could provide further clues about the central bank’s monetary policy direction.

Market expectations currently point to softer US inflation and a slowing labour market potentially supporting the Federal Open Market Committee’s decision to maintain interest rates at its September 15–16 meeting.

Developments around the Middle East are also expected to influence the dollar and global commodity markets, particularly crude oil prices.

Reports of renewed talks involving Iran and Oman over commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have contributed to a decline in crude prices, adding another factor for currency and commodity traders to monitor.

The outlook for the naira will therefore depend on domestic foreign exchange liquidity, CBN policy, oil-market developments and the direction of the US dollar as investors assess incoming economic data.
