Press release: Police crime fight in Sokoto state

Operation puff adder foiled hoodlums attack, some suspects arrested in connection with various offences.

The shift from traditional policing practices to employment of the recently reviewed crime fighting strategies by Sokoto State Police Command under the leadership of CP Muhammed Usaini Gumel FIPMA, psc  has begun yielding positive results during the last two weeks. Some of these achievements are as follows:

  1. Criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and Causing hurt: on 09/07/2022 at about 1630hrs, one Mamuda Mande ‘m’ of Badawo village of Wamakko LGA Sokoto, reported at Wamakko police station that on 07/07/2022 at about 0252hrs, unknown person (s) attacked and inflicted serious injury on his head and also robbed him of hundred thousand naira (N100,000.00) cash. Investigation commenced by the state CID Sokoto upon which the following suspects were arrested Hussaini Harande, Shehu Aliyu and Aliyu Abubakar.

In the course of preliminary investigation, they all gave a stunning confession for been responsible for the attack as well as extortion of (N100,000.00). In addition, the suspects admitted ownership of the sticks and blood stained clothes recovered at the crime scene. They will all be arraigned in court soon as police investigation is almost rounded off.

2. Criminal conspiracy, Culpable homicide, armed robbery and mischief by fire: On 21/06/2022, at about 1000hrs one Shehu Mamman ‘m’ of Zangon Atti village in Gwadabawa LGA Sokoto State reported at Gwadabawa police division that on the same date at about 0800hrs while he was molding blocks along with with his father Muhammad Riskuwa ‘m’ aged 90yrs, were both attacked by a group of vigilante men who were armed with cutlasses, sticks and guns. The attackers who accosted them and beckoned his father through a conversation. In the process one of them shot his father dead, ransacked the house, made away with the sum of N430,000.00k, set their house ablaze and also burnt his corpse beyond recognition. A full scale police Investigation which promptly commenced by state CID discovered at preliminary stage that the said Shehu Mamman who said had recognized identity of some of the assailants led the investigation team to the arrest of Aliyu Abdulrazak and Rabi’u Abdullahi all members of the outlawed vigilante that lunched the attacks. Their arrest further draw some vital confessions which led to the arrest of other key suspects that physically took part in the commission of the crimes. They are all male residents of the same address as follows: Mustapha Yakubu, Abdul’aziz Suleiman, Abdulbasiru Alhaji Idi and Isah musa.

At the preliminary stage of the police investigation, all the suspects under custody confessed that they were the ones that went to the house of the victim, killed him and set his corpse ablaze. The suspects will be arraigned in court.

3. Foiled  Hoodlums attack:  On 13/7/2022 at about 2100hrs, some hoodlums in their numbers  armed with life threatening weapons invaded Tungan liman village Wurno LGA  in two teams and began shooting sporadically, in a swift reaction by one of the teams quickly responded by engaging them while the hoodlums who already started breaking and ransacking one of the shops in the village belonging to one Bello Hali and already stole away some items and money as follows: The sum of N40,000, cartons of macaroni and packs of cigarettes and soft drinks. 

This is success that incapacitated the hoodlums and forced them to hurriedly retreated from the village without kidnapping any one is the product of the community partnership and intelligence led policing initiatives which was fully employed by the team of PMF personnel on standby duty and conducting operation puff-adder. In addition, the hot-pursue by the DPO who led a fierce fighting team from Wurno Divisional Police Headquarters visited the scene and recovered the following items:

a) one techno cell phone,

b) two live ammunitions 62  X 39 mm,

c) a pair of sandals  belonging to the hoodlums.

Although there are no attackers arrest made yet however, a full scale police investigation is in progress.
