The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has clarified a viral video involving its patrol team in Abuja’s Central Business District, describing the incident as misrepresented.

The Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Osondu Ohaeri, gave the clarification in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja.

It was reported that the footage showed a tense encounter between FRSC officials and a driver who allegedly failed to comply after being booked.

The situation reportedly escalated when the driver diverted from the route to the command, attracting a crowd amid unverified claims involving an iron rod.

Ohaeri said the vehicle was lawfully intercepted for traffic violations, including overloading and seatbelt non-compliance.

He added that FRSC personnel acted in line with standard procedures to enforce compliance.

“The driver became non-compliant and diverted from lawful directives, creating a scene that attracted public attention and heightened tension.

“As the situation evolved, a crowd gathered, raising security concerns and the potential for disorder.

“The allegations circulating are false, as none of the personnel assaulted, threatened, or attempted to use force against the driver or occupants,” he said.

Ohaeri clarified that the individual holding an iron rod was neither linked to the driver nor the Corps, but a passerby.

He said personnel displayed professionalism, restraint, and emotional intelligence in managing the situation.

He noted that disengagement aligned with global best practices in enforcement and conflict management, given the volatile crowd dynamics.

“The action should not be interpreted as weakness, but as a strategic approach to prevent escalation, protect lives, and maintain public order,” he said.

Ohaeri reiterated FRSC’s commitment to safer roads while upholding professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights.

He urged the public to disregard misleading content and cooperate with law enforcement officers in their lawful duties.
