Notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has reportedly issued a series of threats following the arrest of his close associate, Wurgi, a key lieutenant responsible for negotiating and collecting ransoms for hostages.
Wurgi is believed to play a pivotal role in Turji’s operations, particularly in the eastern areas of Sokoto and Zamfara states, targeting communities in Isa, Sabon Birni (Sokoto), and Shinkafi (Zamfara).
According to intelligence sources cited by Zagazola Makama, Wurgi’s capture has infuriated Turji, sparking widespread concern among residents and security agencies in the region.
Reliable sources indicate that Turji has already reached out to influential figures, including village chiefs in the Shinkafi area, demanding Wurgi’s immediate release. He reportedly threatened to launch attacks on their communities if his demands were not met.
Alternatively, Turji is alleged to have pledged significant resources, including money and livestock, to secure Wurgi’s release. With substantial control over people and livestock in his enclave, he is prepared to use them as leverage to pressure authorities.
If these efforts fail, Turji has vowed to escalate his response. He has reportedly threatened to disrupt peace across eastern Sokoto and Shinkafi, promising widespread violence and the execution of hostages currently in his custody. Among these hostages are residents from Isa, Sabon Birni, and Shinkafi.
This is not the first time Turji has employed such tactics. Five years ago, he made similar threats following the arrest of another associate, Dikko Chida. At that time, Turji’s threats forced the government into negotiations, ultimately securing Dikko’s release.
The arrest of Wurgi represents a critical opportunity for authorities to weaken Turji’s network. However, the government’s response will be pivotal in determining whether Turji’s threats result in further violence or lead to a strategic breakthrough in addressing banditry in the region.
The situation remains tense, with residents and security agencies closely monitoring Turji’s next move.
