Households in Nigeria spent up to N3.3 trillion on water, sanitation and hygiene in 2019, a NBS/UNICEF 2019 WASH -NORM II survey report says. This was revealed in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, by Mr Sunday Ichedi, Head, Public Affairs and International Relations Unit of National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). According to the 2019 Water, Sanitation and Hygiene-National Outcome Routine Mapping (WASH -NORM II) survey, two modules (Water Quality and WASH Accounts) were introduced. The federal government has assured workers that the transfer of the national minimum wage from the Executive to Concurrent list would not work. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, gave the hint at the 2021 May Day celebration, on Saturday in Abuja. A fatal accident at Nkwo Mmiri market in Nwangele local government area of Imo on Saturday claimed two lives and injured no fewer than eight persons. The spokesperson of the Police Command, SP Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed this to newsmen in Owerri. The Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, has admonished Squadron Commanders to defend custodial facilities under their watch with maximum force, just as he declared all custodial centres in Nigeria as ‘Red Zones’. Aregbesola gave the instruction while addressing Squadron Commanders of the Nigeria Correctional Services (NCoS) in Abuja on Friday. The minister’s directive followed the attack on the Owerri Custodial Centre where over 1,884 inmates escaped from custody on April 5. A Mobile Magistrates’ Court on Ahor/Uteh/Lagos Bypass in Ovia North-East of Edo, on Friday, convicted 30 drivers for violation of traffic rules. The Chief Magistrate, Mutairu Oare who handed down the sentence after taking their pleas, however, provided the convicts with an option of fine ranging from N2,000 to N20,000. Oare, however, discharged three other drivers. The prosecutor, Mr Bala Sariki, had told the court that the 33 drivers were apprehended at Ahor/Uteh/Lagos Bypass. Sariki said they were charged with offences ranging from violation of traffic signs, lack of drivers’ licence, violation of COVID-19 protocols, speeding, among others.
