HumAngle’s Managing Editor, Hauwa Shaffii Nuhu, has been selected as a 2025 Journalism Fellow of the Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE), a prestigious programme that trains professionals in ethical decision-making.

The fellowship offers graduate students and early-career professionals training across various disciplines, including journalism, business, religion, law, technology, and medicine. Each year, 13 to 16 fellows are chosen per discipline through a rigorous selection process.

The programme includes an intensive two-week study in Germany and Poland, where fellows examine historical events to gain insights into contemporary ethical challenges.

The 2025 Journalism Fellowship will take place from June 20 to July 4, providing participants with an opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary sessions alongside fellows from other professions.

The programme fosters ethical leadership and professional responsibility, contributing to a global network of over 900 alumni.

As a conflict reporter, Hauwa has extensively documented terrorism, insurgency, and their human cost, particularly focusing on their impact on transitional justice, displacement, migration, and women. Her work sheds light on the aftermath of violence, bringing human-centred storytelling to critical issues.

“So delighted and deeply grateful to have been selected as a fellow for the 2025 FASPE Journalism Programme,” she said. “I will be…learning more about the ethical frameworks within which journalism can be done.”

Her selection portrays HumAngle’s commitment to ethical journalism and underscores the publication’s role in covering underreported issues, particularly in conflict zones.

Through this fellowship, the organisation’s Managing Editor is expected to gain deeper insights into ethical journalism, further strengthening HumAngle’s editorial approach and mission to provide nuanced, responsible reporting.

About Hauwa Shaffii Nuhu

Hauwa is a poet, lawyer, and conflict reporter from Nigeria who has bylines in several local and international publications, including African Arguments, Al Jazeera, Minority Africa, The Republic, and Sahelien.

She has done extensive work documenting the aftermath and effects of war on people through long-form reports and documentaries.

She was a 2018 writer-in-residence at Ebedi Writers Residency, a 2022 Storify Africa Fellow, a 2023 Pulitzer Centre grantee, and a 2023 International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) grantee. In 2024, she was named a recipient of the Ochberg Fellowship by the Dart Centre for Journalism and Trauma.

Currently, Hauwa serves as the Managing Editor at HumAngle Media, where she leads a team of conflict reporters while covering the human cost of terrorism and insurgencies in relation to transitional justice, migration, and displacement.
