The University of Ilorin (Unilorin) has expelled or rusticated 19 students involved in various offenses.
Their offenses ranged from misconduct, theft, examination malpractice, hostel bed-space racketeering, extortion, and assault to admission racketeering.
Those expelled included six final-year students, the varsity’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun stated in Ilorin on Monday.
“The expulsion or rustication of the affected students followed the recommendations of the Students’ Disciplinary Committee at its 220th/221st meeting,” he stated.
The majority of the Unilorin students expelled were either in their first year, second, third, or fourth year in school.
While some of the students were expelled, others were rusticated either for one academic session or for one semester.
University of Ilorin, also known as Unilorin, is a federal government-owned university in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. It was established by a decree of the federal military government in August 1975.
The establishment aimed to implement one of the educational directives of the Third National Development Plan, which was aimed at providing more opportunities for Nigerians aspiring to acquire a university education and to generate high-level manpower, which is vital for the rapidly expanding economy.
Compared to other higher institutions of learning in the country, the institution has one of the largest land areas, covering approximately 15,000 hectares of land. It is reported by the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) to be the most sought-after Nigerian university in 2021.
And again in 2023, it was announced by the JAMB Head, Professor Ishaq Oloyede to be the sought-after University, for the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME), making it for the 10th consecutive year.
The university began in 1975 as a university college affiliated to the University of Ibadan. Dr. T. N. Tamuno who was a professor and Head of the History Department at the University of Ibadan was appointed the first principal of the college in September 1975.
