The Deputy Governor of Edo state, Philip Shaibu, has emerged the winner of Edo Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary election.

The PDP had cleared 11 governorship aspirants for the primaries, which takes place today.

The Edo PDP is divided into two factions, with the party’s leaders of the party in Edo Central District, adopting Asue Ighodalo as their preferred governorship aspirant ahead of party primary.

Mr Igodalo, a Lagos-based lawyer and former chairman of Sterling Bank, is also the preferred candidate to Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Governor Obaseki and his deputy, Shuaibu have engaged in political crisis even since the later signified his interest to succeed his principal.

At mmany ocassions, Obaseki have refused to take hand shakes from Shuaibu, in spite of reported pleas by the Deputy Governor for Obaseki to forgive him for whatever he has done to him.

Bartholomew Moses, the returning officer, who announced Shaibu as the winner of the primary election, said the deputy governor won the exercise with over 300 votes.

Some party delegates who arrived at the lawn tennis court of the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium in Benin City, were reportedly denied access.

The delegates subsequently moved to Shaibu’s residence where the election was held.

Meanwhile, the primary election recognised by the PDP national working committee (NWC) is still ongoing at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium.
