A Yola-based non-governmental organisation (NGO), called Eco Clean initiative, has called on government at various levels to henceforth begin to make substantial budgetary allocations towards promoting climate adaptation finance.
An official of the group, Mr Godness Dickson, made the call on Friday, when he led hundreds of environmental ethusiasts on a one-kilometer road walk to mark the 2023 Global Action in support of the implementation of climate justice by nations.
Dickson said the annual event was being observed to remind the government and other stakeholders, individuals and groups of the need to salvage the plight of those affected by climate change.
“We call on all those concerned, especially governments and donor agencies, to make money and other relevant resources available to mitigate the negative impact of climate change,” he said.
Dickson attributed the incidences of climate change to flooding, desertification, pollution and indiscriminate felling of trees for fire wood, charcoal and wood making.
According to him, his organisation has planted over 1,600 variety of trees in Girei Local Government Area and other communities in the state aimed at controlling climate change.
Mr Joseph Danladi, one of the organisers, said the event was organised in collaboration with Agape-Earth Coalition, which specialised in championing climate change issues.
He said that the theme for this year’s programme is: “Our planet, Our climate, Our fight”.
