The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) will be partnering with Child Cyber Protection (C-C Pro) for the group’s Nigerian Teen Cyber Festival (ngTeenCyberfest2023).
The festival would empower Nigerian teens with skills for online safety.
Ms. Delmwa Gogwim, the Co-Founder of ngTeenCyberfest2023 disclosed this on Wednesday in an interview in Abuja.
C-C Pro is an organization that promotes healthy interaction of young people and technology.
Gogwim said the festival would provide the opportunity for the NDPC to leverage the ngTeenCyberfest2023 to empower Nigerian teens with essential knowledge, and skills, and promote data protection, and privacy awareness nationwide among teenagers.
Gogwim said: “The partnership comes at a time when our society increasingly relies on technology and digital platforms for various aspects of life.
“This has made it crucial to educate and empower the younger generation to protect themselves against potential online threats such as identity theft, cyberstalking, cyberbullying, and data breaches.
“By joining forces, NDPC and ngTeenCyberfest2023 are committed to addressing these concerns and fostering a safer online environment for Nigerian teenagers.”
She further said that this year’s edition of the ngTeenCyberfest2023 would be held on September 28 at Baze University, Abuja.
Its expected theme is “Promoting Young People and the Power of Innovation in a Digital Economy”.
The co-founder added that hundreds of students from secondary schools and higher institutions would have the opportunity to interact with experts and stakeholders, helping to improve the management of young Nigerians in cyberspace.
She, however, quoted Dr Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner of NDPC, as saying that they were committed to the task.
Gogwim quoted Olatunji as saying, “With the rising prevalence of cyber threats, we must equip our youths with the knowledge and resources necessary to navigate the digital landscape safely.
“By working together, we aim to create a more resilient and secure digital environment for Nigerian youngsters.”
Gogwim further said that the efforts were aimed at creating a paradigm shift where Nigerian youths not only understand the importance of cybersecurity but actively practice safe online habits.
