ASHENEWS reports that the Niger State governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago has applauded the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) for the enviable heights it has achieved in the past six decades.
The governor stated this while speaking during the 60th-anniversary celebration of NIS with the theme “Enhancing Seamless Migration” held in Minna on Thursday.
Represented by his deputy, Yakubu Garba, the governor tasks the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) with strengthening border security.
“I am sure that it has been 60 years of triumphs and challenges, but overall, the service has indeed grown to some enviable heights,” he said.
He expressed optimism about the improvements in the issuance of travel documents and passports to Nigerians within and outside the country and the issuance of residence permits to foreigners in Nigeria.
He assured the service of the state government’s commitment to support its operations in the state.
On his part, Mr. Samuel Nongo, Controller of Nigeria’s immigration service in Niger, said that there was a need for the government at all levels to invest in migration management to forestall trans-border crimes.
“Citizens must change their orientation to stop harboring irregular migrants because of the dangers it portends,” he added.
Nongo appealed to the state government to support the organization with logistics to enable them to police the country’s borders.
