The Nigeria Institute of Architects (NIA) has commended the Kano State Government for the ongoing demolition of illegal structures and sub-standard buildings in the state.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Press Secretary to governor Abba Yusuf, Bature Dawakin-Tofa in Kano.

The statement quoted the President of the institute, Arch. Enyi Ebo calling for the demostication of the new national building regulations code to rectify the abuses on physical development in the state.

Ebo made the commendation when he led the executives of the institute on a courtesy visit to Yusuf at the Government House as part of activities heralding the 9th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the institute in Kano.

He appreciated the state government efforts within short time of its assumption on the ongoing demolition of illegal structures in the metropolis.

“What we saw is positive in the sense that as professionals dealing with buildings, major concern is the compliance with the dictates of the master plan of any building.

“We doff our hat to Kano state government for the giant strides in checking the abuses of physical development and implore the government to demosticate the building code which not only guides professionals in terms of standard, but also specifies the process for designing and supervision of buildings.

“It also has compliance forms that ensures that building professionals play their roles and also the provision of the buildings,” Ebo emphasised said.

Responding, Yusuf who was represented by the Chief of Staff, Shehu Sagagi, thanked members of the institute for the visit.

He described the visit as timely looking at the situation on ground that needed professional guidance to carry the engagements according to the stipulated guidelines.

Sagagi underscored the rescue mission embarked by the new administration, including provision of foodstuff to boarding secondary schools, evacuation of hundreds of tonnes of waste, restoration of streets light and skill acquisition centres, as well as demolition of illegal structures and buildings.

He reiterated the commitment of the present administration towards implementing people oriented policies and programmes, especially for youths and women in the state.
