Barely 74 hours after the ASHENEWS reporter was shortlisted for the 2023 Wakaso Award for Young Female Journalists in Niger state, the Africa Foundation for Young Media Professionals (AFYMP) on Saturday, again announced the same ASHENEWS reporter, as one among several other fellows, who will be joining its 2023 annual Young Media Professional Funded Media fellowship program.

Fatima Zahra Muhammad was selected under the 2023 Disability and Inclusion in the Media Fellowship, a project which focuses on increasing the visibility of marginalized voices in the media.

The fellowship, which is a yearly funded media project, was introduced to strengthen, empower and position next-generation, early-career journalists across Nigeria and Africa.

The six-month-long program, mostly virtual mentorship, will begin with a two days intensive in-person workshop that will take place in four major cities in Nigeria, including Abuja, Port Harcourt, Lagos, and Ibadan.

With funding from MacArthur Foundation and Wole Soyinka Center for Investigative Reporting (WSCIJ), the fellowship offers training for fellows in the areas of Media Entrepreneurship, Campus Journalism, Women in Journalism as well as inclusion Reporting.

Africa Foundation For Young Media Professionals is a media skills/career development organization established to raise the standard of media professional practice in Africa beginning in Nigeria.

“It is entirely a Media Skill Development, Mentoring, Debate, Awards, and Discussion platform to create budding raw materials that will equip the upcoming and middle-level/established media professionals in the African media industry.

“Our organization’s activities are targeted toward Young and Early Career Media practitioners of five years and below, students of media, communications, and Public Relations,” the foundation said.
